Q. Becoming an owner-builder - Things you need to know?

Q. Legislation
A. From 1 October 2010, the Course in Owner-builder Compliance (91509NSW) is the required education for owner-builders. The course, developed by Fair Trading, is nationally accredited for 5 years with provision for a mid-term review and can only be delivered by registered training organisations.

Q. How long is the ABSOLUTE "Statement of Attainment" valid for?
A. 5 years. You can register today. Login or download the course material in 12 months time, then sit the exam 12 months after that.
Q. Are we approved by the NSW Office of Fair Trading and ACT Planning and Land Authority?
A. Yes. Not only are we a Registered Training Organisation (Providor No. 91521), we are listed as an approved provider on both the OFT and APLA government websites.
Q. Do I have to complete the assessment in one sitting?
A. No. You can complete each module one questions at a time. Your results are saved everytime you press the `save answers` button. You can login and logout as many times as you like over how ever long you need.
Q. What is the pass mark for the assessment?
A. There is no pass mark. Students will be deemed competent in each assessment module that is being assessed in a holistic approach.
Q. Can I complete the course and sit the assessment from home?
A. YES. You can register, download and read the course material, and sit the assessment from any computer with an internet connection.
Q. How long does it take to complete the online course?
A. For NSW: The nominal duration is 2 days 2 days to complete the underpinning knowledge questions. On average, most people complete the ABSOLUTE online assessment in under 8 hours.
For ACT: The course is completed online in under 3 hours.
Q. How much does it all cost?
A. For NSW: The cost is $189.
For ACT: The cost is $99.
Q. Do I really need an owner builders licence/permit?
A. In NSW, If the cost of the owner-builder work exceeds $12,000, the Office of Fair Trading requires owner-builders to complete an approved education course.

In the ACT, there is no monetary amount applicable for owner-builders but there are a range of exemptions which can be found in the following document. ACT owner-builder exemptions.
Q. Are there any other fees or costs associated when signing up?
A. NO.
Q. Is the online assessment included in the price of registration?
A. YES.
Q. How many times can I sit the online assessment?
A. Unlimited. You can sit the assessment as many times as you like until you pass, although if you fail the course a number of times, you will be required to prove your competence to one of our trainers.
Q. What is the pass rate?

Q. What are the steps to becoming an owner builder?
A. Step-1: Register online.

Q. How long does it take to receive my "Statement of Attainment" in the mail after I pass the online exam?
A. If you selected the express post option when registering, you can expect to receive your "Statement of Attainment" in less than 24 hours.

If you didn’t select the express post option when registering, your "Statement of Attainment" will reach you in 2-3 working days.
Q. How long do I have to sit the assessment after I register?
A. 5 years. There is no time limit as to when you have to sit the online exam. The login that you registered with, will be valid for 5 years.
Q. How many questions are there in the online assessment?
A. For NSW: There are 111 multiple choice and short answer questions and 21 Learning Activities.
For ACT:There are 20 multiple choice questions.
